Brooklyn Decker and her 2 movies will be in theatres this weekend, but she won't take a seat
May 18th, 2012NEW YORK, N.Y. – Now that she's stopped modeling, former Sports Illustrated Swimsuit star Brooklyn Decker is posing for the cameras more than ever: There she is with the paparazzi in Australia, on the red carpet in London and on the cover of this month's Women's Health and the June issue of Redbook.

With Brooklyn Decker in two films this week, a look at five top models-turned-actors
May 18th, 2012LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Everyone in Hollywood wants to be a multi-hyphenate, right? Everyone wants to show they can do it all. A key figure in that tradition is the model-turned-actor. Maybe they wanted to act but had to take modeling gigs first; maybe they modeled first but wanted to prove they were more than just a pretty face.
Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Brooklyn Decker continues her crossover this week with supporting roles in two very different films: “Battleship” and “What to Expect When You’re Expecting.” There are countless other examples of performers who’ve done this, but here’s a look at five who’ve staked out serious careers in front of both kinds of camera.
— Milla Jovovich: Born in Kyiv, she was spotted at age 11 by famed photographer Richard Avedon, who featured her in Revlon’s “Most Unforgettable Women in the World” ads. Jovovich went on to appear on dozens of magazine covers and in campaigns for several brands including Banana Republic, Donna Karan, Gap and Versace. But she’s also carved out a major acting career as star of the sci-fi “Resident Evil” series (directed by her husband, Paul W.S. Anderson) and has appeared in films as varied as “The Fifth Element” ”He Got Game” and “Stone.” But she still keeps a hand in fashion, in recent years serving as co-designer for the clothing line Jovovich-Hawk and sitting in the front row of shows for Chanel, John Galliano and Nina Ricci. (Jovovich also recorded her first album when she was just 16. But that’s a whole ‘nother list.)
— Charlize Theron: The statuesque stunner from South Africa started modeling in Milan at 16. She later moved to New York to train as a ballerina, but a knee injury forced her to quit dancing and nudged her toward acting. Since then, she’s shown a fearlessness in her choices and an eagerness to play parts that are less than beautiful on the outside (her Oscar-winning performance as a frumpy serial killer in “Monster”) as well as on the inside (her blistering portrayal of a delusional former prom queen in “Young Adult”). In recent years, she’s been watching others walk the runway at Fashion Week shows including Rag & Bone and she’s been the face of Christian Dior’s J’adore perfume.
— Ashton Kutcher: The 6-foot-2 Kutcher dropped out of the University of Iowa, where he’d planned to study biochemical engineering, after an agent recruited him at a bar to take part in a modeling competition. He ended up winning first place and went on to work the catwalks in New York, Milan and Paris. Kutcher made his name playing dumb pretty-boy roles on the TV series “That ’70s Show” and in movies like “Dude, Where’s My Car?” But as any of the nearly 10.7 million Twitter followers of (at)aplusk can attest, he’s got more substantive matters on his mind. Now he’s replaced Charlie Sheen on the unfathomably popular “Two and a Half Men” and he’s about to play the late Apple founder Steve Jobs in an upcoming biopic.
— Tyrese Gibson: He grew up in South Central Los Angeles but burst onto the pop-culture scene as a teenager singing “Always Coca-Cola” in a 1994 commercial. Soon afterward, Tommy Hilfiger himself picked the gorgeous Gibson to be the face of his brand; he’s also modeled for Guess? jeans. Gibson is actually a model-turned-singer-turned-actor, having released several R&B albums. After making his acting debut in John Singleton’s “Baby Boy,” he found himself with recurring roles in a couple of heavy-duty franchises: all three “Transformers” films and a couple of the “Fast and the Furious” movies. In “2 Fast 2 Furious,” he had the daunting task of replacing Vin Diesel as Paul Walker’s sidekick and he oozed charisma from every pore of his flawlessly sculpted physique.
— Kim Basinger: She was a Breck Girl — that alone qualifies her for this list. A former Georgia pageant queen, she signed a contract with the Ford modeling agency and appeared on several magazine covers in the ’70s. Since then she’s been … well, she’s been Kim Basinger: blonde, beautiful, glamorous. She’s been a Bond girl (in “Never Say Never Again”) and had the contents of a refrigerator poured all over her (in “9 1/2 Weeks”). She’s played the Caped Crusader’s girlfriend (in the 1989 “Batman”) and Eminem’s mom (in “8 Mile”). And in 1998, she won the Academy Award for best supporting actress for her portrayal of the quintessential hooker with a heart of gold in “L.A. Confidential,” beating out then-87-year-old Gloria Stuart, who was considered the favourite for “Titanic.”

Tyra Banks Built Her Modeling Career Over Pizza
May 16th, 2012Tyra Banks has called for a toast over barbecue and burgers to celebrate Vogue’s pledge to promote healthy body image among its models, but it was a toast over pizza that started the famously curvy supermodel’s own career.
The 38-year-old model mogul was just beginning her modeling days when her body changed from a size four to a size six, prompting hate mail and charges made by designers that she was fat and not hire-able.
“My mom said, ‘You know what, we’re going to do about this? We’re going to go get pizza,’” Banks said today on “Good Morning America.” “And over pizza in a Milan pizzeria we crafted a strategy for how to take my curves and make them work for me as opposed to me either starving myself or bowing out of the modeling industry.”
PHOTOS: Tyra Banks Through the Years
Banks, of course, went on to become one of the world’s top supermodels, earning millions of dollars, posing in countless magazines and turning her modeling fame into a business empire.
She also stood out as a critic of the fashion and media industries’ focus on weight, famously appearing in a bathing suit on TV and telling critics to “kiss my fat a**” after Australian tabloids published unflattering photos and said she’d gained 40 pounds.
Now, in an open letter addressed to “models around the world,” the model-turned-mogul is applauding Vogue for its boldness in addressing what she calls the fashion industry’s “unspoken rule” that skinny is OK.
“Real progress is finally on the horizon,” Banks writes in the letter, posted on the Daily Beast website. “Vogue is stepping up, doing the right thing, and protecting that girl. Perhaps that girl is you!”
In the move announced earlier this month by Vogue publisher Conde Nast International, the leading fashion trade’s 19 worldwide editors signed a six-point pact to project the image of healthy models by, among other things, “not knowingly work with models under the age of 16 or who appear to have an eating disorder,” and asking casting directors to check IDs at photo shoots and fashion shows and for ad campaigns.
“When a girl is looking at a magazine with her mother, there are these subliminal images saying if you’re not a size zero, if you don’t look exactly like this, you’re not good enough,’” Banks said on “GMA.” “So the fact that Vogue is making that mandate is the beginning of something huge.”
In the years since that career-changing huddle with her mom over pizza, Banks has hosted her own, eponymous talk show, authored a fiction novel, earned her MBA from Harvard and created and hosted the popular runway reality-TV competition show “America’s Next Top Model,” where she has made a point of promoting healthy figures among her models.
“I’ve existed in this bubble,” Banks said of her work on the show. “And I have had to say, ‘OK, these are my girls in this bubble.’ But then they leave ‘Top Model’ and, if they’re not a size zero, they’re not going to work.
“I actually mentor a whole bunch of girls that are in the fashion industry that work for Vogue all over the world, and other magazines,” she said. “They’re like, ‘I’m at the top of my game, Tyra, I’m now 19 (or 20, 21) and my body is changing. I’m maturing. I’m still eating the same thing but things are changing and I’m not getting as many fashion shows. My agency tells me that I’m now a two and I need to be a zero and they’re firing me.”
“Now I love that I’m not going to be getting that call as much about, ‘Oh, my God, Tyra, I’m hungry. I’m starving. What the hell do I do?,’” she said.
Banks says that as much as the Vogue pact will help the models, she’s equally excited for what it will do for the young girls who look in the pages of fashion magazines.
“Little girls are looking at these things and it’s so important for their mothers to explain to them that things are retouched, that these girls are not necessarily eating healthily,” she said. “That girl needs to close that magazine and her mom needs to help her with her self esteem to say she’s good enough.
“I’m using a word right now called ‘flawesome,’” she added. “That means you plus your flaws are awesome, and equals ‘flawesome.’”

In 1848, railroad worker Phineas Gage survived a severe brain injury when a tamping rod shot through his skull, resulting in significant behavioral changes. In a new study, reported May 16 in the open access journal PLoS ONE, researchers have used CT images of his skull in conjunction with MRI and connectomic brain imaging data of living subjects to reconstruct the injury and investigate which regions of the brain were affected to result in the behavioral changes.
The research team, led by John Van Horn of University of California Los Angeles, found that considerable damage occurred to the left frontal cortex, where the rod entered the brain, but they also found that the damage to his brain’s white matter fiber pathways was much more widespread than previously recognized. Dr. Van Horn comments, “The case of Mr. Gage is one of the most famous and fascinating in all of neuroscience. Understanding how his brain connectivity was affected by his astonishing injury contributes new insight on the nature and context of his reported changes in behavior.” Their findings have implications for the neural network connectivity of Mr. Gage’s brain on a wider scale than just in the area of gray matter damage, add to the history of this famous case, and which may also be of importance to modern day brain trauma patients.

Radius Global Market Research Adds Menu-based Choice Modeling To Augment Quantitative Research Offerings
May 14th, 2012NEW YORK, May 14, 2012 /PRNewswire/ – Radius Global Market Research, a leading U.S. based independent market research company, recently announced the introduction of Menu-based Choice Modeling to its growing suite of quantitative approaches used to build custom research solutions for marketers.
Menu-based Choice Modeling represents a significant advancement for the market research industry. The innovative approach offers a more realistic purchase simulation in cases where customers select a group or “bundle” of products or services from a menu of options.
The emergence of Menu-based Choice Modeling should be welcome news to a number of marketers—especially those in the QSR, computer, mobile phone, insurance and automotive industries. Up to this point, these marketers have relied on more traditional approaches to gain insights into menu pricing and product optimization.
“At Radius GMR, we’ve realized the limitations that certain marketers face when conducting traditional choice modeling research,” says Chip Lister, Managing Director of Radius GMR. “We’ve made significant investments in both the technology and the senior-level expertise needed to set up and execute this terrifically complex modeling work.”
Since the beta launch of its menu-based choice modeling services in mid-2011, Radius GMR has received interest from marketers across a broad range of industries. The company has successfully completed six major studies in the food service, retail, consumer products, travel, and non-profit sectors.
“Response from our clients has been phenomenal,” adds Lister. “We’ve had to move up the official launch date in order to meet the demand.”
